Utah Vehicle Valuation
Choose Your Utah Vehicle Valuation Path
Utah drivers typically arrive at a vehicle valuation question from one of two directions. If your car was repaired after an accident and you're worried it's now worth less simply because it has an accident history, that's a diminished value claim. If your insurer told you the car isn't worth fixing at all and offered a payout to total it, that's a total loss appraisal dispute. The right path — and the right documentation — depends on which situation you're in, so pick the one that matches your claim below.

01
Utah is a no-fault state for bodily-injury coverage under its Personal Injury Protection law (Utah Code §§ 31A-22-306–309), but that no-fault system applies to medical costs, not vehicle property damage. Diminished value and other property-damage claims are handled separately — most commonly as a fault-based claim against the at-fault driver's liability insurer. Utah law also separately recognizes uninsured motorist property damage coverage (Utah Code § 31A-22-305.5) as its own distinct coverage line for first-party situations. A documented, independent appraisal is the evidence that makes a Utah diminished value claim credible, whichever path applies to your situation.
02
Utah law sets specific rules for total loss vehicles: Utah Code § 41-1a-1001 defines the salvage-vehicle standard that triggers a branded title, and Utah Admin. Code R590-190-11 requires insurers to base your cash settlement on documented, verifiable market data — for both first-party and third-party claims. If your insurer's offer doesn't reflect your vehicle's real condition, mileage, or options, an independent appraisal gives you the itemized, market-based evidence to challenge it — before you sign a release.
