Louisiana Vehicle Valuation

Choose Your Louisiana Vehicle Valuation Path

Louisiana drivers typically end up here for one of two reasons: their car was repaired after an accident and is now worth less on resale even though it looks fine (a diminished value claim), or their insurer declared the vehicle a total loss and offered a payout that seems too low (a total loss appraisal dispute). Both situations call for the same thing — an independent, market-based valuation you can put in front of your insurer — but the process, documentation, and deadlines differ. Pick the path that matches your situation below.

WORKING TOGETHER

Whether your Louisiana vehicle lost value after a repair or your insurer called it a total loss, Premier DV builds the independent, evidence-backed valuation report you need for either claim type.

01

Louisiana law recognizes diminished value as recoverable property damage — La. R.S. 9:2800.17 lets you claim the drop in your vehicle's fair market value after a negligence-caused repair, capped at its pre-loss value. The critical detail: Louisiana's prescription period (its version of a statute of limitations) for this type of claim is two years from the date of the accident (La. Civ. Code art. 3493.1, effective July 1, 2024) — shorter than the deadline in many other states, and a hard cutoff after which you generally lose the right to claim at all. Don't wait to get your appraisal started.

02

If your insurer says your Louisiana vehicle is a total loss, that determination follows a specific statutory rule: 75% or more of NADA guidebook value in damage (La. R.S. 32:702). But Louisiana doesn't require your auto policy to include an appraisal clause the way it does for fire policies, so there's no guaranteed built-in right to a second opinion — your policy language controls. An independent appraisal gives you a documented, defensible number to negotiate with, whether or not your policy has that clause.
