Florida Vehicle Valuation
Choose Your Florida Vehicle Valuation Path
Florida drivers typically arrive at a vehicle valuation question from one of two directions. If your car was repaired after an accident and you're worried it's now worth less simply because it has an accident history, that's a diminished value claim. If your insurer told you the car isn't worth fixing at all and offered a payout to total it, that's a total loss appraisal dispute. The right path — and the right documentation — depends on which situation you're in, so pick the one that matches your claim below.

01
Florida is a no-fault state for injury coverage under its PIP law (Fla. Stat. § 627.736), but property damage — including diminished value — is handled separately, typically through a claim against the at-fault driver's liability insurer. The Florida Supreme Court has addressed diminished value directly: in Siegle v. Progressive Consumers Ins. Co. (2002), the Court held diminished value is not recoverable under a first-party policy's "repair or replace" language when the insurer completes a quality repair — which is exactly why most successful Florida diminished value claims are pursued against the at-fault driver's insurer rather than your own. A documented, independent appraisal is the evidence that makes that claim credible.
02
Florida law sets specific rules for total loss vehicles: Florida Statutes § 319.30 defines the percentage thresholds that trigger a statutory total loss, and § 626.9743 requires insurers to base your cash settlement on documented, verifiable market data. If your insurer's offer doesn't reflect your vehicle's real condition, mileage, or options, an independent appraisal gives you the itemized, market-based evidence to challenge it — before you sign a release.
